1943 – 2025
It is with deep sadness that the family of Paul “Sonny” Dechant of Spruce Grove, Alberta, announces his passing on June 19, 2025, at the age of 82 years.
Sonny will be remembered as a sharply dressed man with a kind heart and a welcoming smile. He had a true gift for connection and loved nothing more than visiting, sharing stories, and socializing with friends and neighbours. Known for his dedication to community service, Sonny volunteered countless hours throughout his life in various roles, including with the Peace River Fire Department and as President of Minor Hockey.
Born and raised in Bluesky, Alberta, Sonny attended St. Thomas More High School in Fairview. In 1961, Sonny began his career as a barber. In 1963, he married Viola Scott, and together they raised two children, Cheryl and Darryl. In 1967, they moved to Peace River where Sonny worked for many years at the Peace River Correctional Institute.
In 1994, Sonny moved to Edmonton, where he enjoyed bombing around downtown Edmonton and in the river valley on his scooter. He continued to build friendships, particularly during his time at the Churchill Retirement Community in Edmonton and, more recently, at the Fenwyck in Spruce Grove, where he moved in 2024.
Family was everything to Sonny. He was happiest at family gatherings, surrounded by laughter, good food, and the people he loved most. In his later years, one of his greatest joys was watching his great-grandson Caleb play baseball. Papa was Caleb’s biggest fan.
Dad will be deeply missed and forever loved by his daughter Cheryl Dechant (Doug Coene); his son Darryl (Tanya) Dechant; his grandson Michael (Christina) Coene; and his great-grandson Caleb Coene. He is also survived by his siblings: Helen, Marie (Dave), Bernice, and Bill (Germaine), extended family members, and dear friends. Sonny was predeceased by his parents Katie and Paul; his sister Betty; and his brothers Henry and Michael.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the University of Alberta Hospital Neurological Unit, with special gratitude to Dr. O’Kelly and Dr. Fox for their compassionate care.
Sonny’s legacy of kindness, loyalty, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
