Phillip Leon Poulin, is predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Lea Diane Poulin (Gaboury).
Phil was born on Oct 20, 1936, in Leoville Saskatchewan, to Arthur and Gabriel Poulin. Phil was the youngest son in a family of 10 children.
Phil and Lea started their journey in life from Spirtwood, Saskatchewan. Phil and Lea settled along the way in many small towns in search of work and better times. They followed the drilling rigs during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s from Drayton Valley to Ft Saint John, BC. In the early 1960’s Phil moved to St. Paul, Alberta before moving the family to Fort McMurray, Olds and finally settling in Stony Plain where he and his family lived for 50 years
Growing up in small-town Saskatchewan during the late 1930’s to early 1950’s, life was not easy and money was hard to come by. To earn money at a young age, Phil would chop wood for locals. This laboring task would turn out to be one of his favorite activities in preparation for his commonly known love of a campfire or sitting at the firepit with his loving wife Lea and any family members and friends who frequently stopped by for a visit.
Grandpa was not known for his fashion sense or snazzy outfits. Grandpa was a modest man and a critical thinker. He was a sharp man who understood his business and what it took to negotiate, take a risk, make a safe investment and how to save. Grandpa connected with people. He made a lot of friends in his life and enjoyed a good conversation and perhaps even a beer with that conversation.
An avid hunter and fisherman, grandpa loved the outdoors. He cherished his hunting and fishing trips with family, grandchildren and friends. There was always a good story by the campfire and a good laugh.
Phil was not just a father, grandfather or a father-in law. He was more than that. He was a mentor, a best friend, a role model and someone you could count on, no matter the situation. You may not have always gotten the response you hoped for, but his responses were honest and from the heart.
Grandpa encouraged and taught us all work ethic, the meaning of a dollar and what it takes to make it in this world. We can all agree that we had a very special person in our lives. Life will Definitely not be the same without Phil. There will be an emptiness among all of us.
I am sure that Grandpa is in a better place and holding grandma’s hand. May God rest your soul and you will never be forgotten or thanked enough for being the man, mentor, role model or best friend you were to all of us.
