Valerie Carol FORMANIUK

Passed away on June 17, 2020

Valerie Carol Formaniuk (Huitt) Born September 1946 to Elspeth Clare and Arthur Huitt, Grande Prairie, AB Died June 2020, Parkland County,AB

Our beautiful mother and grandmother passed away a year after her cancer diagnosis. To say she showed amazing strength and courage would be a huge understatement. She leaves behind three children in Scott (Nicole), Carmen (Michael), and Shawn (Susie). Five super loved grandchildren in Logan, Clover, Aspen, Camryn and Sydney. Three siblings in Max (Norma), Anne (Al), Jean (Rob). Nieces and nephew in Jaclyn, Jodie, Kristen, Daylen, Robyn, Jason and Davida. Mother in law, Father in law and sister in law in Jack, Jean and Jackie. She was predeceased by her husband and our Dad Bernie in 2018. Mom was raised on a small farm with her siblings outside of Grande Prairie in a house with no water or power. She grew and left for Edmonton to begin schooling to become a nurse. It would become her life’s work and her career as an RN and RN educator would span over forty years. Most of which was spent in unit 51 at the Royal Alex in Edmonton. She carried a powerful work ethic and drive. Mom met Dad during her schooling, got married and grew a family that she fiercely loved and defended at any cost. She was there to lay structure and give her children the tools to succeed and thrive. Mom did the heavy lifting in the house and steered the ship (and broke a few wooden spoons along the way). She was so grateful to be a part her children’s families and how she loved her grandkids! Proud, proud, proud. She found enjoyment in many things but nothing more than having family around, especially at the cabin on Wizard Lake. So many priceless memories there. She was always very active and would walk her dogs Buddy, then Blue regularly and exercise often. Her most recent endeavor being pickle ball. She really craved giving the blowhard men on the courts a run for their money! She loved gardening, baking, reading and taking trips to Vancouver Island where Shawn and Susie and their girls live. We will miss so many of the qualities that made her special. Her laugh, her advice, her cheerleading, her spirit and beautiful soul. And a dash of tough love for good measure. Heartfelt thanks to Mom’s in-home nurses and the care for her last two months while we tried to navigate through a Covid restricted world. Sarah, Jem, Moncy, Darlene and Christina. Dr Witherana for helping get the train into the last stop on Mom’s journey, we are in your debt. Carmen and Mike were able to graciously gift Mom the dignity and respectful exit she so deserved by allowing their home to be hers. To be able to have the two people that sacrificed so much by her side, along with Scott, Shawn, Aspen and Sarah. She had the love in the room by all who were touched by her and went peacefully. A private ceremony will be held at a later date.

Will always remember Val..three of us nsg. students went to a show at Westmount, met 2 guys who were willing to drive us back to residence, first took us to Bernie's mum and dad's place for coffee (or whatever) and as a result Val was hooked to Bernie. We felt safe with them as 3 girls with 2 guys!Your mum was alot of fun and was so glad to see her at our 50th RAH reunion. I will miss her along with all her good friends. May you be given comfort through the caring of those around you now. Wilma
