

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Alex Schelmety on September 17, 2025. Born on December 5, 1951, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Alex lived a life defined by love, hard work, and loyalty.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bernaldo and Maria Luisa Maldonado Schelmety, and his brother, Bernaldo Schelmety II.Alex is survived by Collette, and their cherished son, Alex, who was his pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Carmen Schelmety, niece Ivonne Schelmety, nephews Bernaldo III and Anthony Schelmety, his in-laws Phyllis and Desmond Neary, and many brothers- and sisters-in-law. In addition, Alex leaves behind countless lifelong friends who stood by him with unwavering support throughout his life and health challenges.
At the age of five, Alex and his family relocated from Puerto Rico to Rockland County, NY, where he attended North Rockland schools and graduated from NRHS.
Following his graduation, Alex proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he earned an honorable discharge and was especially proud to achieve Eagle Eye status.
After his military service, Alex founded his own construction company, turning his natural talent for carpentry and building into a business he could call his own. .
Beyond his work, Alex found joy in the simple things in life. He loved spending time outdoors, especially fishing and hunting with his friends and son. He was a loyal fan of the New York Giants and New York Yankees, and his love for music shone through when he played guitar and sang the classic rock songs of his generation.
Of all his accomplishments, Alex’s greatest joy came with the birth of his son, Alex. Their bond, built on love and respect, remained strong throughout his life—from childhood to manhood.
Those who knew Alex will remember him for his honesty, loyalty, and generous spirit. To know him was truly an honor, and to call him a friend was a gift.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 3:00–7:00 p.m. at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 73 N. Liberty Dr., Stony Point, NY 10980 (845-786-3500). A military burial will be held at a later date.
