Vince was born in the Bronx on November 17, 1933. He attended All Hallows High School, where his time with the Christian Brothers was a formative and meaningful part of his life. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Education from Iona College, a Master’s in Education from Oneonta College, and a Master’s in School Administration from Columbia University.
Vince married Patricia Farrell Mahon on July 8, 1961. The two met while teaching in the Copiague School District on Long Island. Patricia predeceased Vince in 2005.
Vince dedicated his professional life to education. He worked as a remedial reading and mathematics teacher, and he spent the majority of his career in the East Ramapo School District. During weekends and summers for many of those years, Vince also served as a Ranger at Bear Mountain State Park, where he warmly greeted visitors at the Bear Mountain Inn.
Vince was the proud father of eight children and took great pride in the fact that all eight were college graduates. He was a devoted grandfather to 17 grandchildren and a proud great-grandfather to one great-grandson. Nothing brought him greater joy than talking about his children and grandchildren, and celebrating their accomplishments.
Vince also had a lifelong love of dogs. There was almost always a dog faithfully sitting beside him, and in his later years, his beloved companion was Spirit. The name Spirit was chosen as a reflection of Vince’s deep devotion to his Catholic faith and was a loving reference to the Holy Spirit. In recent years, Vince was a member of The Knights of Columbus in Haverstraw, NY. He was also a boxing fan and enjoyed watching boxing matches whenever he had the opportunity.
Vince is survived by his children: Vincent E. Mahon of Suffern, NY; Sheila (Bill) Murray of Horseheads, NY; Patti Mariquit of Suffern, NY; Christopher (Rose) Mahon of New Fairfield, CT; Sean (Laura) Mahon of Cornwall, NY; Brian (Karen) Mahon of Newburgh, NY; Brendan (Mary) Mahon of Suffern, NY; and Meghan (David) Zigler of Cornwall, NY. He is also survived by his 17 beautiful grandchildren, and his great-grandson.
Vince is also survived by his wife, Kate McDermott.
