Anna “Jean” Buck of Stuart, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2020. She was 92 and lived her long life to the fullest with kindness, gratefulness, and faith. She is survived by her beloved husband of 46 years, Dwight L. Buck of Palm City, FL, and daughter, Ann Lowen Brown and son-in-law Gordon H Brown of Ft Lauderdale and Evergreen, CO. Her son, Michael David Lowen, preceded her in death in 1969.
Born to James J. Swartz and Irene Delight Strohl in 1927 in Hazelton, KS, Jean grew up with two brothers, Jimmie and Bill Swartz on a large family wheat farm and experienced the Dust Bowl. Losing her mother early in life, she handled the cooking and sewing of the household, while pursuing her mother’s love of singing and playing the piano. She graduated Valedictorian of her high school senior class of 12. She married Dwight Buck in 1974 in Hutchinson, KS, where she had lived for almost 30 years, raising two children. Jean worked for years as a travel agent, affording many trips overseas. She convinced Dwight to move to Stuart, FL in 1977 after she cited the temperature from the newspaper every morning in FL versus KS.
Together, they enjoyed Florida life with their mutual interests in serving their church, singing in the choir, and going out on their boat to “fish around the corner”. They created many wooden crafts for friends, most famously their sled and reindeer and nativity scenes, which Dwight routed and Jean expertly painted. Jean loved to cook and entertain. Her cookbook, filled with many clippings, was one of her prized possessions. She loved going to the beach and swimming in the ocean, a favorite pastime with her daughter, along with bike riding into her 80’s and attending cooking classes around the country.
In her later years, Jean developed dementia. Eventually she and Dwight moved in together at Grand Oaks Assisted Living, Palm City, where they continued to hold hands and show their love for each other every day. In spite of her illness, Jean had a smile for everyone, and was able to express her faith to the very end.
A memorial service at the Community Baptist Church of Stuart, FL will be planned as soon as allowed with the current Coronavirus pandemic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, (act.alz.org) or the American Cancer Society (donate3.cancer.org).
