Elsie Meleski made a significant impact on many during her life.  My eulogy during her memorial service yesterday can be summarized by four words: water, courage, compassion, and joy.  She lived on the east coast of Florida because she loved the Atlantic Ocean.  Her love of water began as a child, long before Title IV for women's sports, she competed in swimming at the national and Olympic level.  This love of swimming led to teaching thousands to swim, building swimming pools, coaching swim teams, and sending three sons to college on swimming scholarships.  Her courage was legendary,  She took on the sugar industry in 1974 with her Boycott Sugar Campaign (B.S.), leading her to testify at Congress as a consumer advocate. Her compassion for the children in the Guardian program on the Treasure Coast was honored by judges as well as her clients.  The Cursillo songs sung at her memorial service reflected her faith and joy in life.  And, finally, her motto for life:  God is Great!

Elsie is irreplaceable...one of a kind...a woman of the 40's the 50's the 60's the 70's the 80's,  the '90's....and the new millennium. the neighborhood Mom, Olympic swimmer, the neighborhood watch, the Siamese cat lover, the avid bridge player, the organizer, the politician and political junkie, the Realtor who championed Fair Housing rights, the wife, the mother, the friend.
She loved to laugh, she loved dangling earrings, she loved the ocean and all living creatures within it. She loved her family and was most proud of each child, each grandchild. She loved Nichols where we met on Booth Hill Road when I was a kid and had no idea she would become my good friend. She loved Pinewood Lake.  She loved her Port St Lucie community at Spanish Lakes. I wish we could have one more conversation...but that would not be enough. She will always be in my heart but I will miss her so.

Elsie was a very special lady who touched the lives of countless people.  She established a swimming program for all of the children of Trumbull CT, organized a group of senior ladies in a water ballet program, worked as a guardian ad litem into her 80s, and participated in so many other activities during her life.  She lived to be 97 eating lots of red meat and drinking lots of milk, not many veggies and fruits for this Irish American gal!  Elsie was a story teller and she had a lot of funny stories to tell, always engaged in living; she was sharp as a tack to the end.  We'll miss your indomitable spirit Elsie but we know you're with all the good friends and family who preceded you to Heaven.
