

Lucy Mothershead died on Friday night, February 14, 2025 at her home in Hobe Sound, Florida, after a long illness. She was born on March 18, 1939 in Hurlock Maryland. Lucy and spent most of her life on the eastern shore of Maryland, where she grew up and raised her children. She earned a Degree in Psychology from Salisbury University in 1978 and worked as a parole and probation agent for the State of Maryland. Lucy loved her job and retired with many stories to share about the characters she met in her career – on both sides of the law. A lifelong fan of mysteries, Lucy was also a citizen detective, who helped solve at least one local crime.
As an adult, Lucy was an active member of the Methodist church. For her, supporting organizations that advocate for literacy, equal rights for women and minorities, democratic ideals and food security was an essential demonstration of her faith and beliefs. In 1996 Lucy and her late husband, William Mothershead, retired to Flippin, Arkansas where they were active volunteers in their church, community, and local Democratic party including the food bank and local libraries. A lifelong gardener, Lucy helped create Butterfly Gardens in state and county parks as part of a Master Gardener’s group.
In 2019, Lucy moved to Hobe Sound to be closer to her daughter Carol and grandchildren, Seth and Claire as her health declined. She is survived by her daughters , Carol Collins (Don), Mary May (Jeff), and Beppi Isbert (Stephen), her step-daughter, Kathy Mothershead, and grandchildren: Seth Darby (Kim) Claire Darby; Gunnar, Ivana, Strom, and Kira Isbert, Lyndy Galan (Hugo) and Mya Plaskon (Sam), Carol’s stepchildren David Frese (Nadia), Rebekah Ramirez and great grandsons Marik Frese, Gabriel Ramirez, Wesley Galan and Peyton Plaskon, three sisters Jane Holloway, Mary Ann Ford and Sarah Hanson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lucy was predeceased by her parents William Lee and Myrtle Mae (Hayes) Holloway and husbands William Mothershead, James Owen Knotts, and William Charles Collins.
A Celebration of Life will be held this Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the organizations Lucy respected and supported: House of Hope, LAHIA, Emily’s List, Heifer International, NAACP, or a public library in your area.
