We’ve entered a new year without your physical presence in our lives and yet it still feels like yesterday when we were celebrating new year’s and holidays with you. I still can’t believe that eight whole years have passed by and wonder every day what your life would be like today if you were still here with us. Not a moment goes by that I don’t think about you and miss your beautiful smile, your laughter, your hugs and most of all your presence in my life. I still cry for you and feel the absence of you in my life. My heart will never be complete, as you took a part of it with you. My love for you is eternal and love never dies. I welcome your spiritual presence every day, so please stay as close to me as you possibly can. Watch over your brothers Adam and Sean, as they will always need you. Matthew,
Today is your brothers 29th birthday (Adam) & he really misses you. Celebrating life just isn't the same without you here. Sometimes it feels like we are just going through the motions of life, but knowing that is not what you would want for us, we strive to live it to the fullest including you in our journey. Your dad has taken on the task of Commanding his own unit in the USNSCC, which you would be very proud of him. Your dad's the Commanding Officer & I'm his Finance Officer. We are expanding our path with your death by advocating for Suicide Prevention & helping other teens in the Sea Cadets. We hope to turn the page in the right direction by talking about your death & what it has done to our family & the community that surrounds us. If we can educate other teens about suicide & the after effects it has on those left behind, we can only hope that other teens think deep & hard before taking action. We only wish you had thought twice that day before taking your last breathe. We are hoping to relay the message of no return, knowing that you wish you could take that day back. I know I certainly wish I could take that day back, to have a redo, to hold you and tell you that everything would be ok if you just allowed time to take its course. 

I can't begin to express how much I miss you. It's been 7 yrs. How my heart yearns for your laughter, your smile and your hugs. I look for you in so many different things. After loosing your dog, Sasha we waited for the perfect time to get a new dog. I brought Skye home  2 1/2 years ago & I have to say she seems like she has both you & Sasha living in her. She is the most human like dog I have ever had & I'm sure you have something to do with that. She loves Marley & has taken years off of her life. You would have loved her, but I'm sure you do because you are a part of her. Please feel free to visit me as I miss your presence more than you will ever know. Missing you every day my angel. It is has been 7 years since you departed our world.

My pain of missing you has never subsided.  I'm just able to go more days at a time without crying, holding the good thoughts of you in the forefront of my mind.  It will never be easier, but I guess it will never be harder either.  The ravages of this world pails in comparison the emptiness of the void that you created in my space, when you left.  

No one really knows what lies ahead when we leave this earth, but I hope that you have found peace.  I just wish there was a re-set button somewhere that I could push to make things different.

Matthew, this is Dad.  

It's coming up on 4 years since you left our world.  You would be a Sophomore in College this year or well on your Military career if that is what you chose.  How I wish I could have seen you graduate from High School, Basic Training or A School.  My world has been completely changed since you left.  It is almost impossible to not think about you everyday, especially on weekends.  Those were the days that we were able to spend a lot of time together. 

I'm seeing many of your friends and Brother's at Arms making their way in this world.  They keep in contact with your mother and I, which gives us a little comfort in seeing them succeed.  I can only hope that you have found peace with yourself and serenity in the hands of God.  Fair Winds my Son, until we see each other again.  Love DAD.

On the first anniversary of your passing, this candle reflects the candle that is lit in your bedroom window everyday.  May it continue to shine brightly in your honor forever.  You were the light of our lives and many others as well. We look to the stars to see you shining down upon us.  May you continue to shine brightly forever in heaven. Matthew it has been one year since I was able to hold you in my arms and give you hugs and kisses.  There is not a day that goes by that I do not shed a tear for you.  You are on my mind every day all day long.  I say good morning my angel when I see the sun rise and I say good night my angel when I go to bed every night.  I kiss your picture every night which sits on the nightstand next to my side of the bed.  I still can't believe you are not coming home and that I will never physically hold you in my arms again.  I have struggled to come to the realization that I will only see you again when I arrive in heaven.  I can only hope that you have found your cousin Alex who passed away on October 18, 2014 at the young age of 20 years and that you two are reeking havoc in heaven together.  I only wish I could turn back time and have you here with me for just a short while longer.  I miss you more today than I have ever missed you before.  My heart is broken and aches for you every day.  I can only look back and remember all of the good times we had as a family on many memorable trips.  You were one of the biggest and best parts of my life.  I will never forget the day you came into my life.  Even then you had a smile so gigantic it melted my heart.  I love you more than words will ever express and miss you more than life will ever know.  I hope you knew how proud I was of you and of all your accomplishments.  You were the best at everything you put your heart and mind to.  Until we meet again, just remember you will always be my youngest son who stole my heart in more ways than one. Matthew its been a year since you've left us....we all miss you dearly.  You were so special....and such a loving child.  I have formed a bond with your mother and we talk about you all the time.   I will never forget the twinkle in your eyes and that wonderful beaming smile.   It certainly has been a difficult year for your friends and family.   I pray that we will all meet again on the other side and I will never forget you.  Rest in peace beautiful Angel!

Happy16th birthday my forever angel. Your dad and I embraced the day by celebrating it with Aunt Deann and Uncle John in Black Canyon National Park in Montrose, Colorado. We spread your ashes over the canyons and released 16 balloons up to the stars in your honor. What a gorgeous day it was. We knew that you were with us in spirit however your physical presence is tremendously missed every single day. Your one year anniversary is coming up and yet it only seems like yesterday that we were able to hug and kiss you. Words will never express how much we miss you. Our hearts will forever bleed your loss. Just know that there is never a day that goes by that we do not think about you. You are truly forever in our thoughts and prayers. It's been almost a year. Almost a year and I still feel so empty. Matt, you don't understand how blessed I was to be able to call you one of my best friends. You lit up my day every time I saw you laugh or smile and it was contagious and I will forever be grateful for that. You taught me so much and I'll never forget that. You're in my thoughts every day and my prayers go out to your family. I love you so much, rest easy baby.

To My Dear Son Matthew, 

I will miss you for the rest of my days on this earth.  There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about you.  There's not a day that goes by, that I don't cry once or twice a day for you.  Yes, I cry because I miss you so dearly.......you were a hero in my eyes.....but I also cry for the loss that the World has suffered for not having such a caring, giving, loving soul amongst us anymore.  You had grown into such a strong young man and I was so looking forward to seeing you reach the immense potential that you had inside you.  I wish there would have been a different path to follow.  

I know that you are still with us in Spirit (as shown by the picture attached to this entry) and you are probably pulling pranks on Grandpa and Uncle Eddie, but we still wish you were here with us, sharing your smile and loving heart with us.  Thank you for giving us 15 of your wonderful years and as Luke Bryant says "so long my friend (son), until we meet again".  My heart will always have a piece of it missing, until that day.  Rest in Peace my son. Love Forever.... in our hearts, Dad.

I previously tried to make an entry in this book GIVING THANKS to all of those who have help us through this tragedy, but somehow it so kindly wiped out about 25 minutes worth of typing that I had done.  I am hoping I have better luck this time.

Our house is so empty now.  Every time the dogs bark we hope it is you getting ready to walk through the door.  Then only to realize that will never happen again.  I look for you every night up in the sky and see many stars, but the only really bright star in the sky must be you.  I know this must be you because you always lit up every room you walked into with that humongous smile of yours and now know that you are lighting up the heavens with your gigantic heart and love for happiness. I feel honored to have been a part of this precious boy's life, first as his second grade teacher, and later, as his friend.  You hold a special place in my heart, Matthew. I am glad to have seen Matthew again several weeks back, as the young man he became is the memory I will keep with me. I can only wish peace for him and all who will carry his spirit from now on.

As a person who has experienced a near death experience I want to say that the other side is full of  indescribable love and peace and joy and those of us who have been there can attest that God IS there and it is a beautiful place to be.  Matthew is safe and at peace. This life that each of us shares with each other at this time will soon lift and we will all rejoin Matthew and our loved ones in joy and love. I have had the great honor of knowing and becoming great friends with Matthew while at training this past summer. He was always the light of the party, the happiest of the bunch, the one who never gave up. I can not begin to express how deeply sorry I am for your lost. To hear about the loss of a brother is never a good feeling. I can't even begin to fathom how you all feel. Even though I didn't know Matthew, he was still a brother. A brother through USNSCC, is a brother non the less and the Baton Rouge and Lafayette Divisions will be praying and keeping you all in our hearts. In Proverbs it says “Trust in the LORD with all your heart,

 And He shall direct your paths.” Just remember that God had a job for Matthew and we aren't brought home until we have completed our missions. Matthew has served and has completed his mission. Matthew, you where one of my favorite kids to have ever coached.  Your passion for playing, your work ethic, and your desire to have fun was unequaled.  There wasn't a position on the field you didn't want to play or try.  Everytime I saw you, you had that scheming grin that let me know you were up to something.  You always put a smile on my face with your silly antics, witty remarks, and our constant smack talking about your surfer boy hair and my bald head!  And everytime my temper got the best of me, you would chime in with a goofball comment that made it impossible for me to hold back a smile or remain angry anymore.  You touched so many lives and are still loved by so many.  Please rest in peace buddy.

My heart bresks for you all. Matt I haven't seen you for a few years, but boy do I remember you at the ball field. Your smile will always be with me. Tracy, Evan, Sean and Addy your Matthew will be missed. Matt is in the arms of our SAVIOR. I love you guys.

But I believe it is the greatest gift we will ever receive, and although I know this loss is heart-breaking, you will always have the joy of remembering what a special little boy and young man he was.
