Charles Wampler Fairchilds

He was, in every sense of the word, a massive force of nature. He was a man with a commanding presence, an incredibly smart mind, and a heart that consistently reached beyond himself.

Charlie was thoughtful, strong, and deeply loyal. He had the kind of character that made people feel safe, seen, and valued. He was the best host of every occasion, always making room for others and showing up with generosity, often giving to people without making it known it was him.

He leaves behind the legacy of 4 children and 10 grandchildren and a life built on strength, wisdom, and love. Charlie's children and spouses/significant others are Hannah Fairchilds & Wendy Derthick, Todd Young, Cameron Fairchilds, Sean & Kim Fairchilds, and Derek & Chelsey Fairchilds. His grandchildren, in order of age, are Charlie Dean Fairchilds, Flynn Young, Ella Fairchilds, Caleb Young, Brogan Young, Vee Fairchilds, Piper Young, Jameson Fairchilds, Virginia Fairchilds, and Beatrice Fairchilds.

Charlie’s most enduring partnership was with his wife, Karen Virginia Harken Fairchilds, whom he celebrated 55 years with; a milestone they marked together just before his passing. Their love, companionship, and shared life were a testament to what lasts.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Betty Barnhart Wampler Fairchilds and Joseph Vern Fairchilds, Sr.; and his brother, Joseph Vern Fairchilds, Jr.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Karol Wilson and her husband Charles Wilson; and his sister-in-law, Cheryl Lackey Fairchilds.

Charlie was born in Richmond, Virginia. He earned his undergraduate degree from Bridgewater College and his graduate degree from The Darden School at the University of Virginia. He was also recognized as a member of the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame, reflecting both athletic excellence and lifelong connection to the school he loved.

Professionally, Charlie spent 10 years with Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana and the rest of his successful career with Waynesboro Ornamental Iron and Allied Ready Mix. He later served in Director leadership roles for Community Bank in Staunton, VA and City National Bank in Charleston, WVA.

He devoted his time to a variety of community boards, including the Waynesboro YMCA. He believed in serving not for recognition, but for bettering the community in which he lived.

Charlie was a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, VA where his life reflected steady faith, practical compassion, and a commitment to serve.

Beyond his responsibilities and commitments, Charlie loved life and he loved it with enthusiasm. He had deep, inspirational friendships with the people he loved. Some of his favorite joys included: being a Notre Dame and University of Virginia sports fan, working on his vegetable garden with his neighbor Joe, boating, fishing, camping, golf and an adult beverage with his friends.

Charlie was a pillar of the local community for over 40 years. He gave his time and money to causes he believed in, and he made an impact that will be felt long after the details fade.
