

Iris was born in Vesuvius, Virginia to Ruby G. Dedrick and Virgil J. Dedrick Sr. on June 25th, 1940. She graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in 1957, at the age of 17. Upon graduation, she began to pursue additional education and a career in restorative therapy. She loved helping other people and spent a long career working at a local Nursing Home assisting patients with their therapy. She was a longtime member of Valley Covenant Church, where she was part of their Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the choir as well as playing the cornet and tambourine. Iris was also a South River District organizer for the Girl Scouts. She was also a Troop Leader to multiple troops, spending time going to jamborees and doing cookie sales. She served with the Girl Scouts for 37 years. She also adored her family and enjoyed Chinese Checkers and strategy games.
In addition to her parents, Iris was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Robert Paul Peterson; sons, Clayton “Butch” Paul Peterson, Norman Niebel and Eddie Peterson; daughters, Wanda Yates and Connie Guy; and best friend, Nina Bridge.
Iris is survived by her children, Anthony Alan Peterson, Michele Garnett Peterson, Robert Paul Niebel and a multitude of stepchildren. In addition, she is survived by four grandchildren Aaron Root, Erica Hostetter, Mallorèè Calloway, Felicia Calloway; twelve great grandchildren; her brother, Virgil J. Dedrick II; sisters, Joan Campbell and Karen Dedrick Kennedy. She is also survived by special nephew VJ; special niece Angela, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. Lastly, she is survived by her special friends, Bertina Brown, Gina Conner, Pat Layne, and Marge Yancey.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, October 3rd, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Rev. Jerry Steele officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Steeles Tavern.
Pallbearers will be Robert Niebel Jr, Daniel Peterson, Keyvon Jones, Kyerin Jones, C.F. Conner, Bruce Mays, Jacob Mays and James Hostetter.
Honorary pallbearers will be, Anton Johnson, Aaron Adams, and Harman Gray Jr.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
