Alice was born Alice Katherine Kaltenback on May 27, 1927 and attended P.S. 92 in Brooklyn, New York. She wrote about growing up in Brooklyn as follows: “The street was our playground, and I was eager to eat my oatmeal and get out for the play of the day.” She was the valedictorian of the Class of 1945 at Roosevelt High School in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and was a member of the Class of 1949 at Smith College. After graduating from college, she taught Spanish in both public and private schools in Wayland.
Alice married Phillip Awad and together they produced four children: Karen Tyler of Lyme, Connecticut, Gail Bogle of Weston, Jocelyn Evans of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and Jane Borgeson, who died in 1988. She and Phil lived in Wayland until approximately 1972 and then Weston. She spent the final nine months of her life at Newbridge on the Charles in Dedham, MA.
Alice was an avid tennis player, and thanks in part to her encouragement, all four daughters were accomplished players as well. She also competed in bowling and bridge at the Weston Golf Club. She spent many winter months in Boynton Beach, Florida at Quail Ridge Country Club. She enjoyed the works of Shakespeare and the New York Times crossword puzzles. She also wrote poetry in the form of Haikus, and insisted they be read aloud at every birthday or other family event. A recent diary entry stated “I have led a conventional life with few glittering achievements but one of great personal satisfaction.”
Alice was pre-deceased by her husband. Along with three daughters and two sons-in-law, she is survived by five grandchildren: Benjamin and Katie Tyler, William and Jeremy Bogle, and Phillip Evans.
Arrangements under the direction of Duckett Funeral Home of J. S. Waterman, Sudbury, MA.
