She was born on February 11th, 1919 in Toledo, Ohio to Antony P. and Argero (Kakludis) Hoty. She attended college at The Cleveland Institute of Art, in Cleveland, Ohio, before marrying Dr. Demetre J. Decaneas and moving to Boston, MA. She managed the office for her husband’s medical practice for many years. After moving to Weston, MA in 1958, she and her husband were founding members of St. Demetrios Church in Weston, MA and she was active in The International Institute of Boston and Weston Rombas. She was also a long time member of the E.O.K. (Hellenic Womens’ Club of Boston) and served as president from 1978-80, and the St. Demetrios Philoppochos, and various other causes. She was an avid cook, gracious hostess and intrepid traveler. In order to further her love of Paris and French culture, she began studying French when she was 80.
She was the inspiration to many as the primary caretaker for her husband, Dr. Demetre J. Decaneas, who suffered in his later years from Alzheimer’s disease. For more than fifteen years, she tenderly cared for his every need at their home in Weston.
She will be remembered for her good humor, her culinary expertise, her sense of adventure, and her never faltering grace.
Mrs. Decaneas was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Demetre J. Decaneas, and her daughter-in-law, Nancy Maclaurin Decaneas.
She was the loving mother of John D. Decaneas of Barefoot Bay, Florida, Antony D. Decaneas and his wife, Ellen, of Revere, MA, and Peter R. Decaneas and his wife, Karen, of Londonderry, NH. She was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, Nick Decaneas and his wife, Kate Nemens, Alexander Decaneas and his wife, Amy, William Decaneas and his wife, Rebecca, Arthur Decaneas, Andrea Decaneas, and William Baldelli. She delighted in being a great-grandmother to Eliza Decaneas, and was a favorite aunt of many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her siblings George A. Hoty, Nicholas A. Hoty, Nike Vasilakes, Michael A. Hoty, Mary Nenopoulos, and Peter A. Hoty.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10:30am in St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston. Interment will follow in Linwood Cemetery, Weston. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation on Friday, August 26, 2011 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm in St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston.
