

Thompson, Arthur T. Thompson, 96, of Newton formerly of Wellesley died peacefuly at the Kaplan Family Hospice in Danvers on Saturday, May 9, 2015. Predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Virginia (Deringer) Thompson, he is survived by his daughters Deborah A., and Harriet T. Thompson of Newton, granddaughter, Ashima Scripp and husband Robert Bloomfield of Windham, NH, and great grandson Thatcher Bloomfield.
Arthur Thompson retired from Boston University as Professor of Engineering Emeritus and from Wentworth Institute of Technology as Provost Emeritus. His academic positions were Associate Dean of Engineering at Penn State University, Dean of Engineering and Associate Vice President at Boston University and Provost at Wentworth Institute.
He was awarded an Arts degree from Colby College, an Engineering degree from Penn State with graduate degrees in Engineering from Harvard University and Business administration from the University of Chicago. He holds honorary doctorates from Colby College, Norwich University and Wentworth Institute of Technology.
A World War II Veteran he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He is a fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and is a Registered Professional Engineer.
He is a trustee Emeritus at Colby and Wentworth and was on the Academic Board of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a Trustee of Norwich. His honors include the Education Award of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal of the U.S. Army.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 79 Denton Rd., Wellesley, Friday, June 12, at 11:00 o’clock in the morning.
