Bruce Porter, 75, of Sudbury, MA, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham, MA, after eighteen years of courageously living with Parkinson’s disease. He was surrounded by his wife of 20 years, AnnMarie Lanza, and his sons Warren Porter of Berwyn Heights, MD, and Jason Porter of Worcester, MA. He will be remembered for his endless curiosity, passion for sustainability, competitive spirit, and love of the outdoors.
Bruce’s life began on April 24, 1951, in Rockville Centre, NY. His late parents, Albert Porter and Ellen Reilly, raised their third son in Baldwin, NY, alongside his three brothers, Albert Porter of East Windsor, NJ, Robert Porter of Rockville Centre, NY, and George Porter of Bohemia, NY. After graduating from Oceanside High School in 1969, Bruce earned a BS in Physics at Stony Brook University in 1973.
Bruce’s career spanned pure research to applied research to manufacturing engineering. Arriving in Greater Boston immediately after leaving Stony Brook, he researched ultrasonics at the now-defunct Foxborough Company while studying electrical engineering at night at Northeastern University and completing an MS in 1980. MIT Draper Laboratory employed him next, and he secured two patents for his work. Opportunities in optical engineering brought him to employers such as General Scanning and Corning, but his final 12 working years were spent at Waters Corporation of Milford, MA, where he maintained production lines of medical equipment and facilitated offshoring production to companies overseas.
Always an avid athlete, Bruce maintained constant motion between competitive team sports like basketball or softball, and solo sports such as cycling, sailing, cross-country skiing, or squash. Hiking united Bruce’s love of exercise with nature, his other major passion, and served as a bond with his wife and sons. After retirement, Bruce dedicated his time and energy to the preservation of Sudbury’s natural ecosystems through his service with the Sudbury Conservation Commission and as Land Steward of Sudbury Valley Trustees’ Gray Reservation. Endless curiosity guided Bruce to learn more about the impact of glaciation on the local geology and geography. He collated that knowledge in a guided walking tour of glacial deposition features visible behind Curtis Middle School and in Haynes Meadow.
Bruce’s participation in the Retired Men’s Association, RMA, his decades-long membership at First Parish of Sudbury, his years of dedication to the senior center fix-it program, his devotion as a sailing instructor at the MIT Sailing Pavilion, and his political activism supporting local bicycle safety demonstrated his civic engagement and passion for helping others.
In his immediate family, he leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Dimelza Gonzales-Flores of Berwyn Heights, MD. In his extended family, he leaves behind his sister-in-law, Patricia Fitzgerald, of Danvers, MA, Patrick and Jennifer Fitzgerald and their sons, of Fort Washington, PA, and Brian and Meghan Fitzgerald and their children, of Amherst, MA. A memorial service is planned for First Parish of Sudbury this autumn.
Memorial contributions can be made to Sudbury Valley Trustees, 18 Wolbach Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776.
