Chalat first came to the United States in 1960, the first of her 5 brothers and sisters to travel halfway around the world from her home, and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. It was here that she met her husband, John C. Sperou, and in January of 1964, were married. One of Chalat’s earliest jobs here in the United States was at the Registrar's Office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She also found her passion in travel. She worked for different local travel agencies, including Crimson Travel Service, which allowed her and John to visit exotic places in the world, which she loved.
Another passion Chalat had was for food, and in August of 1986 was able to open the Chez Siam Restaurant in Marlborough, MA. The restaurant was the 3rd Thai restaurant to open in Massachusetts. The restaurant was a hit, and she loved serving authentic Thai cuisine to a new audience. Chez Siam recently closed after 39 years in business, with many, many patrons coming back to where they were first introduced to Thai food.
Chalat is predeceased by both her father, Sard Tumsaroch, and mother, Mali Tumsaroch (Tavolpol), her husband John C. Sperou, and her sister Nitaya Tumsaroch Matthias.
