

Elisabeth Mörner Gleysteen, of Weston, Mass. and previously of East Boothbay, Maine and Washington, D.C., died peacefully on Sept. 24th. She was 85. Elisabeth Katerina Mörner, a native of Sweden, was born in London on May 21st, 1925. Her parents were the late Count and Countess Hans-Georg Mörner av Morlanda of Stockholm, Sweden and New York, NY. She graduated from the Chapin School and Sarah Lawrence College. An artist since her youth, she painted throughout her life. She met her future husband, the late Culver Gleysteen, in 1945, and was married in 1950 after he returned from Darien, China, where he was posted as a US Diplomat. As a dedicated Foreign Service spouse, she supported and enriched her husband’s and her adopted country’s diplomatic efforts in world hot spots, which including three tours of duty in the former USSR. She also served in Bonn, Germany, Djakarta, Indonesia, and Paris, France, between postings to Washington. While in Washington, she taught in the Washington D.C. public school system as an art teacher and was actively involved in community volunteer efforts. After her husband’s retirement from Government service, she and her husband retired to East Hampton, N.Y., followed by East Boothbay, Maine. She spent her final years in Massachusetts. She is survived by her four sons, Peter, Nicholas, Jan, Marcus, their wives, Renate, Paula, Suzanne and Judy and nine grandchildren. The Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 79 Denton Road in Wellesley, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 23rd at 11AM.
