It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Gottberg, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who peacefully departed this life on August 9, 2025. Born and raised in New Jersey, and a longtime resident of Sudbury, Betsy was a radiant presence in her community and a source of love and support for her family.
Betsy was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Robert Gottberg. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and enduring memories. Their partnership was a beautiful testament to the power of love, and the legacy they created continues to inspire their family.
She is survived by her beloved children, Robert Jr. and his wife Lore, David and his wife Deborah, Joseph and his wife Kimberly, and Jennifer and her wife Marilyn Carson. Betsy’s spirit will also live on through her six grandchildren—Amanda and her husband Ian Williams, Briana and her husband Stewart Sherrill, Shane, Lauren, Christopher and his wife Erika, and Ryan—and her three great-grandchildren, Harrison Greene-Gottberg, Wade and Parker Sherrill. Each of them will forever hold dear the warmth, compassion, wisdom, and unwavering support that Betsy so generously shared.
A Nurse by profession, she often told stories of her work at The Phillips House building at MGH as a private duty nurse. After leaving her profession, she shifted her focus to raising a family and supporting others. Whether it was being a Den mother, or one of the founding members of the Sudbury Villagers and the Thursday Garden Club, Betsy was deeply committed to her community. She enjoyed participating in town activities and was an active member of the Sudbury Historical Society, Sudbury Grange and St. Anselm’s Parish. Her long-standing volunteer work with the Sudbury Food Pantry and other local organizations reflected her dedication to helping those in need.
Betsy was a sweet person with an exceptional sweet tooth and never said no to a treat. She had a wonderful sense of humor and she cherished the adventures that her daughter Jenn and daughter-in-law Mel brought her on. The time she spent with family and friends filled her life with joy and laughter, creating memories that are treasured by all. She also had a special fondness for animals, particularly her beloved 'grandkitties' and 'granddoggies.'
Betsy will be remembered for her kind spirit, her deep love for her family, and the quiet resilience that guided her through life’s joys and challenges. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Sudbury Food Pantry, or a charity of one’s choice, continuing her legacy of kindness and service to others.
Visitation at Duckett-J.S. Waterman & Sons will be held Friday, September 5, 2025 from 4:00-7:00pm. A funeral mass will be held at 10am on Saturday, September 6 at St. Anselm Church, Sudbury.
