“Tuck,” a resident of Weston since 1954, enrolled at MIT with plans to be a sound engineer, but a presentation in his junior year by a visiting professor captured his interest and he devoted the remainder of his study to the (then) new field of radar, and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1942. He entered the Navy upon graduation and served on the USS Brooklyn as a radar officer during World War II. He received a commendation for performance during battle in the Casablanca conflict for his quick work in restoring electronic function to the ship after it had been knocked out. He retired from the Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander in the early 1960s.
After the war, Tuck worked first at Draper Labs, then at Raytheon, where he remained until his retirement in 1985. An avid handyman, and more comfortable in overalls than a tie, he enjoyed a second career at Ogilvie’s hardware store in Weston, where he worked for the next 25 years as the resident fix-it guy.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Tuck will be remembered by those who knew him well for his gentle humor, his exceptional integrity, and his devotion to family. He is survived by Frances (Barker) Tucker, loving wife of 72 years; his 4 children; Wayne C Tucker of Exeter, RI, Sheldon L Tucker of Wilmington, NC, Nancy W Tucker of Goshen, CT, Scott A Tucker of Arlington, VA; and his 6 grandchildren; Luke, Jessica, David, Nicholas, Alexandra, and Zoë.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter’s Church of Weston.
