With gratitude for a life filled with family, laughter, curiosity, and memorable style, we celebrate James Edward King Jr., who passed away on October 3, 2026, in Marlborough, Massachusetts, at the age of 87.
Born on May 15, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, James was the son of the late Laina Anne King (Huhtala) and James Edward King Sr. He was raised in Chicago and graduated from Tilden Tech High School. He attended the University of Illinois and later earned his Masters in Engineering at the Florida Institute of Technology in 1970.
James built a long and accomplished career in engineering. In his early years, he worked at Cape Kennedy and was involved in the Apollo II launch. His longest professional chapter was with Digital Corporation, where he served as a Digital Engineering Manager and was involved with launching the first personal computers, including the VT103 and Rainbow. After Digital was acquired by Hewlett Packard, that work remained part of the career he built with dedication and skill. Beginning at age 60 and continuing until retirement, he worked at Bose Corporation in Framingham. He was known as a well-loved manager who truly cared for his employees.
Just as central to James’s life as his work was the deep importance of family. He married Marilyn Louise King, the love of his life, in September 1969, and together they shared 57 years of marriage. In 1971, they welcomed their first child, James Edward King III, known as Jimmy. In 1974, they welcomed their daughter, Laura Lynn King. Over the years, family trips to Cape Cod, Chicago, and Disney World became part of the happy fabric of their life together.
His family continued to grow in ways that brought him great joy. Jimmy married Cathy Moss King in 1993, and together they welcomed Brendan and Trevor King. Laura married Evan Boudreau in 2012, and they had two sons, Jake Boudreau and Finn Boudreau. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his grandson, Finn Boudreau, his sister, Joanne Bernas, and his brother, John King.
A visitation for friends and family will be held at Duckett Waterman Funeral Home, 656 Boston Post Rd, Sudbury, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Following the visitation, the King family invites family and friends to celebrate Jim’s life over lunch at Bolton Street Tavern, 587 Bolton St, Marlborough, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in James King’s memory to Buddy Dog Humane Society in Sudbury, Massachusetts, at https://www.buddydoghs.org/donate
