John E. Toland, 49, of Sudbury (formerly of Quincy) passed away of natural causes on December 25, 2012. Beloved husband of Mary M. (MacLean). Loving father of Owen, Brendan, Andrew and Helen. Devoted son of Bernard J. and Catherine M. (Geishecker) Toland of Quincy. Also survived by his siblings: Patricia Toland of Quincy, Nancy Lindahl and her husband, David, of Thetford, VT; Elizabeth Stravin and her husband, Charles, of Quincy; Michael Toland and his wife, Diane, of Canton and Jennifer Powers and her husband, Daniel, of Attleboro. John is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews as well as Mary's extended family.
Born in Dorchester and raised in Quincy, John was a graduate of BC High class of 1982 and Mass. Maritime Academy in 1986. He was a chief engineer in the merchant marine, working on ships that traveled to ports worldwide. John then pursued a career in facilities management, most recently as Facilities Manager at Intel's Hudson plant since 2000, where his dedication, knowledge and compassionate leadership was noted by colleagues and friends.
John was devoted to Mary and his four children, and was very involved in their social and youth sports activities, coaching Sudbury youth baseball, Lincoln-Sudbury youth lacrosse, and has been a dedicated board member and coach of Sudbury Maynard Stow (SMS) Youth Hockey Organization. He was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima parish in Sudbury.
A funeral mass will be concelebrated Saturday, December 29, at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Road, Sudbury. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Duckett-J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Rt. 20, Sudbury. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Sudbury.
