

Joe Hewitt of Groton, MA and Orlando, FL passed away into the next life surrounded by the love of his family and friends on January 18, 2014. He was 72 years old and had bravely faced the scourge of Alzheimer’s disease. Survived by his beloved wife Patti, daughters Sindi Eichner and Sara Darby, sons David and Steve Hewitt and son-in-laws Brian Eichner and Brian Darby along with his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A lifelong entrepreneur, Joe built the first self-service grocery store in Orlando Florida in the mid-1960’s. Later, he became a recognized expert and leader in the commercial landscape business, creating Pro-Lawn Maintenance, a training ground for many landscape experts that came out of his program. Joe was a master woodworker and a lifelong student of the art.
A community activist, Joe was a leading Neighborhood Watch Program coordinator and well-known for the care and concern he had for anyone in need. Joe had an especial affinity for wildlife and animals of all kinds.
