Joseph Florentino Orabona

Joseph F. Orabona, a 56-year resident of Sudbury, died Monday, April 22, 2013 following a period of declining health. He was 91 and the husband for 61 years of Marjorie (Seifert) Orabona. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Antonia (Sprocci) Orabona, and was a graduate of New Bedford High School in 1939. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 through 1946 as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class on Fletcher-class Destroyers in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal among others and was recalled to naval service in the Korean conflict. Following graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1955, Mr. Orabona worked for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Labs as a mechanical engineer. In addition to his wife, Marjorie, he is survived by 5 children; Marcus Orabona of Ormond Beach, FL; Lisa Atwood of Woodstock, CT; Andrea Orabona of Lander, WY; Justin Orabona of Manassas, VA; and Lucas Orabona of Hudson, MA. He also leaves 10 grandchildren; Ashley Bailey; Jamieson and Jessica Atwood; Quinn Cerovski; and Lindsey, Laine, Michael, Emily, David and Danielle Orabona; and 2 great grandchildren, Jaedin and Kaspen Sorrell. He is also survived by his sisters Olga Cardullo and Mary Balestracci of New Bedford, MA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, at 11:00 am from the Duckett-J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute followed by a funeral liturgy at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Road, Sudbury at 1:00 pm. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Burial with Naval Honors will be at Wadsworth Cemetery, Sudbury. Rather than flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Joseph’s memory be made to Goodnow Library Foundation, 21 Concord Rd., Sudbury, MA 01776.
