Mrs. Peacock was born in the family home in Waverly, MA on December 4, 1925; the second of George Leslie McKenzie and Janet Scott’s three children. The family moved to Belmont and Marian enjoyed summers in Ipswich with the family. Marian received her undergraduate degree from Wheelock College and her Master’s in Education from Radcliffe College. Upon graduation, Marian taught 2nd Grade at the Warren Elementary School in the Wellesley, MA school system.
On July 15, 1956 she married George Emmons Peacock of North Conway, NH. The couple lived in North Conway until 1957 when George accepted a position with Raytheon Corporation in the Comptroller’s office and moved to Waltham, MA. The couple was active at the First Congregational Church in Waltham where all 5 of their children were baptized. Mr. Peacock continued to work with Raytheon for 35 years, eventually in the capacity of Senior Financial Analyst.
In 1970, Marian and George moved their family of 5 children to Sudbury, MA. Marian continued her education work in the Sudbury Public Schools and became active in the congregation at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church. Marian and George were always supportive and involved in their children’s busy athletic and extra-curricular schedules. The family was fortunate to enjoy summer vacations at McKenzie family home on Nantucket Island. Marian and George moved to Nantucket to enjoy their retirement in 2000. During their time on Nantucket, both as seasonal and as year-round residents, Marian continued her busy community schedule including involvement with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church as well as a member of the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA). She also worked as a docent in any number of the historical properties of the NHA and became quite knowledgeable in the history and culture of Nantucket Island.
In 2006, Marian and George moved to Charlton, MA as inaugural residents of Overlook; an independent living community. They enjoyed a busy schedule and their host of new friends, many of whom became as close as family. For many years, Marian was an active and vocal member of Overlook’s Resident Advisory Board and other groups including the LINUS Club where she was able to share her love of knitting. Through many years, Marian and George were able to provide a loving home to a number of Olde English Sheepdogs through the New England Sheepdog Rescue Society. In October of 2007, after more than 51 years of marriage, George lost his battle with cancer. Marian’s Overlook family helped her through this difficult period. She continued her active lifestyle after George’s death. Most recently, Marian was able to provide a home to her loving and devoted companion “Reggie”, a West Highland Terrier who she rescued from the puppy mills of the mid-west. Her last day was spent baking a pie and enjoying activities with many friends at Overlook. She passed suddenly in the early evening as the result of cardiac arrest.
Mrs. Peacock was predeceased by George; her parents; her beloved brother Donald Scott McKenzie, and an infant son. She is survived by her son Donald Emmons Peacock, his wife Nancy Allen Peacock and their son Alexander Peacock of Newmarket NH; her son Douglas Scott Peacock of Haiku, HA and his companion Janice Hamasaki of Portland Oregon; her son Thomas McKenzie Peacock, his wife Barbara Pallian Peacock and their sons Landon Pallian, Cameron Peacock and Connor Peacock, all of Westford, MA; her daughter Sarah Frances Peacock Moran and her fiancé Paul Coppin along with their sons Kevin Moran and Shaun Coppin of Nashua, NH; her son James Thornton Peacock of Nantucket Island; and her sister Jane McKenzie Parker of Sanibel Island FL and N. Falmouth, MA; and many dear and loving nieces, nephews and their extended families.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 16 at Noon at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, 1 Morse Road, Sudbury, MA 01886. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the New England Olde English Sheepdog Association, 49 Stonehedge Road, Lincoln, MA 01773 or The Nantucket Historical Association online at www.nha.org.
