July 14, 1931 – April 13, 2019
Marie H. Connolly passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on April 13, 2019. She was born July 14, 1931 in Stamford, Connecticut to Harold and Marie (Mahon) Hynes. Marie married Ronald C. Connolly on July 9, 1955.
Marie graduated from Tufts University in 1953 with a Bachelors of Arts in English. She and Ron started their married life in Quantico, Virginia and Cherry Point, North Carolina due to Ron’s commission into the Marine Corps. They relocated numerous times either due to Ron’s positive career progression or during retirement. She counted Darien, Stamford, Hartford, Wethersfield, Westport and New Canaan, Connecticut; Osterville, Medfield and Marlborough, Massachusetts; Lake Forest, Illinois; Bernardsville and Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, as home. Marie was a top-notch interior decorator and home renovator. Without professional training, she developed an expertise in horticulture and artistic design; her favorite creation was her rock garden in Bernardsville, New Jersey. An active Garden Club member in many towns, Marie was asked to bring her uniquely grown specialty fern to show and educate other clubs about her gardening techniques.
A consummate homemaker and volunteer, Marie was loving, genuine, empathetic, energetic and creative. She raised her four daughters, Betsy Connolly, Judy McLevey (Patrick), Susan Gress (Scott) and Lisa McKinley (Robert) to be strong, independent, loving and caring people. Whether volunteering as a Board Member of the Moraine Girl Scout Council (IL) and Girl Scout Cookie Coordinator, Parent Teachers Organization Member (for numerous schools), Church Trustee and Decorating Committee Member (for many churches), Board Member of the Bernardsville, New Jersey United Fund or Community Fundraiser, she worked hard to exceed each organization’s goals. Marie and Ron travelled extensively all over the world.
Besides her husband, four daughters and three sons-in-law, Marie leaves behind twelve grandchildren; Stephen, Meghan, Erin, Connor, Ryan, Quentin, William, Sean, Eoin, Alex, Brin and Jason. She also leaves a sister, Judith Gould, of Charlottesville, Virginia, and a numerous other beloved family members and friends. Her sister, Barbara Brown (Viele) predeceased her.
The family would like to thank Marie’s caregivers at Dana-Farber. Donations can be made in Marie’s name to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168. In addition, the family also thanks Good Shepherd Community Care Hospice and the Sisters of Good Shepherd and Saint Anne for supporting Marie at the end of her life.
