He was the son of the late Efim and Marie Melnick and attended Newton High School.
Michael was an alumnus of Northeastern University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1966 after serving his term. After his military service, he went back to Northeastern University to obtain his master’s degree in structural engineering. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple New England states. In his career, he worked as a project manager on various large scale building projects within Massachusetts, including the TD Garden in Boston, Mullins Center in Amherst, The Boston Athenaeum in Boston, Longwood Galleria in Boston, Tufts University in Medford, Brandeis University in Waltham, and 99 High Street in Boston.
Michael was a proud member of Sudbury’s Permanent Building Committee since his initial membership in 1978, working on design and construction for both new and renovation projects for town-owned public buildings, often in the role of the PBC Project Manager. During his 43 years, these included police and fire headquarters and stations, all elementary schools, Curtis Middle School, Goodnow Public Library, Town Hall, Flynn and DPW buildings, Loring Parsonage, Hosmer House, Senior Center and multiple Fairbank projects, multiple roofing projects and several energy efficient projects for existing buildings. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, working in the yard, sailing and investment trading.
Michael is survived by his wife, Sandra of Sudbury, MA; his daughter Susan Melnick and her fiancé Jonathan Rothman of Towaco, NJ; his son Michael Melnick and his wife Jackie of Medford, MA; his brother Paul Melnick and his wife Jeanne of Center Harbor, NH; his brother Thomas Melnick of CA; Olga Melnick, the wife of his late brother James Melnick of Putnam, CT. He was also predeceased by his brother John Melnick of Newton, MA.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 29 from 5-7 PM at the Duckett-J.S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road/Route 20, Sudbury. Funeral service will be Thursday, September 30 at 11 AM at the funeral home, followed by interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Sudbury.
