Muriel Jean (Neily) Nelson, peacefully passed away in her home on Feb. 24, 2023, following a 3-year battle with cancer. Born in Everett, MA in 1935, Muriel was the only child of Leonard and Gertrude (Hampton) Neily, both of Canada. She had 87 years to live, enjoy, and share her life with the people who loved her.
After graduating from Everett HS, Muriel married George Nelson from the neighboring town of Malden, MA in 1955. Muriel and George moved into a 2-family house in Everett with Gertrude and Leonard and had two children – Blake in 1959 and Karla in 1961 - before moving to Sudbury, MA to raise their family.
Muriel loved her new community of Sudbury and helped to keep the town running! She was a secretary at the Town Highway Department before joining the Town Clerk’s Office. Later she worked for Raytheon Company at the Sudbury and neighboring Wayland plants as department administrator before returning to Sudbury Town Clerk’s Office part time to help with record keeping and town elections.
Muriel was an animal lover. Many lucky dogs and cats were rescued and given a happy, valuable place by her side. She also enjoyed travelling, visiting Canada, Mexico and Alaska.
Muriel leaves her son, Blake Nelson and his family: daughter-in-law Lisa Nelson, and granddaughters Paige Nelson and Heather (Halliday) Nelson as well as great granddaughter Riley Hueras (Halliday’s daughter.) Muriel will also be missed by her loving daughter Karla (Nelson) Day and her family: son-in-law Jeff Day, grandson Kyle Day, granddaughters Michelle Day and her fiancé Chris Crawford, Melissa and her husband Aziz UrRahman, great-granddaughters (Melissa’s daughters) Brianna, Emily, and Wareesha. They will miss her every day.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Muriel’s memory to Save A Dog.
