

Richard Howard (Rick) Janey died peacefully in his sleep,surrounded by the love of his family and friends in Milford, MA February 16, 2015 following a lengthy illness. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 29 years, Claudia Haines Janey, daughters Cheryl Janey Calhoun and Christine Janey Stotts, grandchildren Richard R. Stotts, Christopher Stotts, Richard H. Janey III, Rachel Janey and Bryan Calhoun; great-grandson Sebastian Stotts; son-in-law Michael Calhoun; daughter-in-law Denise Latson Janey; sister Muriel Patton; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel B and Clara Janey, his first wife, Patricia Ann Lomax Janey, son Richard H. Janey, Jr. and brothers Charles, Kenneth, William and Herbert Janey.
Rick was born in Boston MA on September 30, 1932, the youngest of six children. From his beginnings on Notre Dame Street in Roxbury, he went on to graduate from Boston Technical High School. He apprenticed as an upholsterer under the tutelage of his brothers Bill and Ken. Rick served his country in the US Army as part of the 272nd Field Artillery Battalion of Massachusetts (nicknamed The Deuce), one of the last units consisting of solely African American soldiers during the Korean War, and later as part of the National Guard. He had a successful 30+ year career with the IBM Corporation where he rose through the ranks to become a leader in the company’s division focused on the sustainment of computers. Following his retirement from IBM, Rick devoted his time to his favorite pastimes including fishing on Cape
Cod, golf, bowling and active involvement in Greater Framingham Community Church.
Rick was a vibrant, charismatic man with a brilliant smile, a hearty handshake and a quick wit. He enjoyed calypso music, cookouts and a warm hug. He was active in the civil rights movement during the 1960’s, played the guitar and sang as part of the folk singing duo Pat n’ Rick, and was active in community development issues throughout his life. He leaves a legacy of strong faith in God, immense love of family and friends, and steadfast perseverance in all things. Rick was loved and respected by countless people, a mentor to many and above all, lived true to his values. He is irreplaceable.
Funeral Services will be held at Greater Framingham Community Church Saturday February 21, 2015 with family visitation and viewing at 11am followed by the 12 noon funeral. Internment will be Monday February 23, 2015 at 11:15am at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Bourne, MA.
