

Born in Brockton, MA, Richard was a graduate of Brockton High School and Boston University. After college, he enlisted in the US Navy where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant, specializing in underwater explosive ordnance disposal. Richard was a Vietnam veteran, and during his time in the Navy was also stationed in Hawaii, Italy, and California. After his service in the Navy, Richard began work as a stockbroker in Washington DC, where he met his wife Karen. While in Washington, he pursued a Masters in Business Administration from American University.
In 1974 they returned to Massachusetts, settling in Marlborough where Richard worked for 17 years as Treasurer at the Marlborough Cooperative Bank. He was active in the community, at one point serving as President of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed countless hours exercising and socializing at Marlborough’s Wayside Racquet and Swim Club as one of its original members. He finished his career working as a financial advisor in Boston for Scudder Investments, even lending his voice-over talents to a national commercial for the company. In retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife, visiting with friends, reading, doing Boston Globe crossword puzzles, watching MSNBC, boating and clamming, and spending time with his extended family at their cottage in Wareham, MA.
Richard leaves behind his beloved wife Karen of 55 years; his son Michael Leighs and his wife Kristen Leighs of Cary, NC; his daughter Stephanie Pessolano and her husband Marc Pessolano of Maynard, MA; and his four grandchildren, Jack, Caroline, Nicholas, and Cecilia.
A visitation will be held Monday, June 2nd from 4-7PM at the Duckett Funeral Home, 656 Boston Post Rd, Sudbury, MA 01776. Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM on Tuesday, June 3rd in the Martha Mary Chapel, 35 Dutton Rd, Sudbury, MA.
