Bob attended Keith Academy in Lowell and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1967. He later attended law school, first at Fordham University and then at Suffolk University, where he graduated.
Although he passed the Massachusetts bar exam, Bob found his true calling in education, particularly as a history teacher. Over more than 30 years in the Chelmsford, MA, school system, he taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
Outside the classroom, Bob’s interests and talents were wide-ranging. In his early years, he worked in the harness racing business. He was a gifted writer, contributing a sports column to the Lowell Sun while in high school and later writing for the Chelmsford News Weekly. He was an accomplished tennis player and swimmer, and a devoted fan of Notre Dame football, the Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots. A skilled photographer, he maintained a darkroom in his basement to develop his own prints. He also took pride in his garden, growing flowers and vegetables for his family.
In later years, Bob and his wife Virginia shared a passion for travel, often seeking out Segway tours in destinations including Machu Picchu, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Poland, and numerous U.S. National Parks. He also delighted in family trips to amusement parks, roller coasters, and annual visits to Lancaster Central Market in Pennsylvania.
Bob will be remembered by his family for his sharp intellect, quick wit, and steadfast support. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his children, Thomas, Christopher, and Kelly; Kelly’s husband, Khai; and their daughter, Emma.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the Gary Dunn Thomas Scholarship Fund at Xaverian Brothers High School at 800 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood, MA 02090. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a later date.
