Agnes E. Gravius

Agnes “Aggie” Gravius, nee Smith, passed away peacefully at her home on January 12, 2022. She was surrounded by her loving family. Agnes was a Suffern resident for almost 50 years, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harold “Hack” Gravius, to whom she was married for 60 years before his passing in December 2018. Agnes leaves behind her five children, Billy (Gretta), Susie (Dave), Daniel (Diann), Eileen (Rick) and Timmy (Suzann). She was also blessed with nine grandchildren, Vance (Alexis), Matthew, Ricky, Gianna, Patrick, Michaela, Gillian, Brendan, and Kieran. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Jackie Gravius, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Agnes was born in Yonkers, NY and was the eighth of nine children born to Patrick and Agnes (nee Murray) Smith. In addition to her parents, Aggie was predeceased by her siblings, Anna, Pat, Mary, Peggy O’Gorman, Johnny, Jimmy, Gerry and Eileen Vitanza.

In 1953, she graduated from St. Barnabas High School in the Bronx and held secretarial positions before marrying Hack, the love of her life, and starting their family.

Aggie and Hack lived in the Bronx, NY and Maywood, NJ, before settling in Suffern, NY. Agnes loved to dance, garden in the Summer, and tan at Island Lake. She loved to knit and crochet and her blankets and sweaters were a prized possession.

Agnes was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Suffern, NY for 49 years; she had a sweet tooth and passed her love of black and white cookies down to her grandchildren! She was a true example of facing life’s challenges head on and putting trust in God. We will miss her tremendously but know she will be dancing in Heaven – with Hack watching.

*Wake and Funeral Mass will be private, per family’s request. Mass will be live streamed by Sacred Heart Church.

*In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be mailed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
