Arline Ruthberg died peacefully at 11:30 pm on Sunday April 20, 2014 at The Ramapo Manor nursing care facility in Suffern, NY after a long period of illness and functional decline at the age of 89. She was born in the Bronx, NY on February 18, 1925 as the daughter of Edward and Adele Reed and sister of Lawrence Reed, all of whom have passed before her. She was married to Harold Ruthberg for over 55 years until his death on September 19, 1999. Harold and Arline have two sons, Andrew and Edward, a daughter in law Kristin and grandchildren Matthew, Danielle and Michael.
She was part of a generation of New York City residents who began to move to Rockland County in the late 1950’s to help make a better life for their children. The family lived in Cameo Homes in Monsey for approximately 30 years. She and Harold were able to put both sons through college and graduate degree education and contribute to funding for their grandchildren. Arline was a stay at home mom for many years but also obtained an Associate degree at Rockland Community College and re-entered the work force including time at Rockland Community College and the Pomona Mental Health Center (now known as the Robert L. Yeager Health Center). She and Harold were active members of Temple Beth El for many years. She was a member of the choir. After Harold’s retirement they spent most of their time in Florida with their last home in Boynton Beach. Arline returned to Rockland County after Harold’s death.
Age and illness left her with very limited function during her last few years but she achieved almost all of her key goals during her lifetime being a good and caring daughter when her parents were in need; a good wife and partner to her husband Harold and then partial caregiver during his last year of illness and a loving parent and grandparent helping to achieve that goal of making a better life for the next generations.
She enjoyed the large community of friends she and Harold developed during their many years in Rockland County and would wish to pass on thanks to those who may learn of her death from this obituary.
Aline's family requests that donations be made to United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Ln., New City, NY.
