

Barbara Ann Malone, 91, passed away peacefully, on September 9, 2025. She was born on October 29, 1933, to the late James F. McAvoy and Jenny (Deraney) McAvoy. Barbara served in the U.S. Navy, attended Boston University on the G.I. Bill, and earned a Master’s in teaching from NYU. She had a long career as an elementary school teacher in the Ramapo Central School District.
Throughout her years in education, Barbara touched the lives of countless students with her patience, kindness, and unwavering commitment to learning. Her colleagues remember her as a passionate educator who brought creativity and warmth to her classroom, making learning an adventure for every child she taught.
Barbara was known for her quick wit, sense of humor, and civic spirit. She was active in community service, including work with the Suffern Free Library and the Woman’s Club of Suffern. An intelligent and thoughtful woman, Barbara was never afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what she believed in, earning the respect of all who knew her.
An adventurous spirit, Barbara sought out new challenges and experiences throughout her life. Her love of travel led to many exciting trips with Bill, her children, and friends. She especially loved cruising and casinos. At home she enjoyed reading, gardening, listening to music, and her afternoon “coffee and”. Most of all, Barbara cherished the time she spent with family and friends. Her generous spirit and caring nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Barbara’s loving husband of 54 years, William (Bill) Malone, predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Malone and her husband Robert Hall; her daughter Sandra Lattanzio (Malone) and her partner Kim D’Souza; her son James Malone; and her grandson Edward Lattanzio. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Lou Sabbag, and her brother, John McAvoy and his wife, Linda McAvoy; her sister-in-law Catherine Bender, her sister-in-law Sharon Cronk and her husband Thomas Cronk, along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025, from 5-9 p.m. at the Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Rt. 59, Suffern, NY. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Frederick Loescher Veterans Cemetery in New Hempstead, NY.
