It is with profound sadness that after battling Alzheimer’s Disease for nearly a decade, we announce the passing of Bruno Cosentino, devoted husband, extraordinary father, father-in-law, Nonno, and creative legend. He was a man of tremendous talent and presence, intelligence, charisma, class, distinction and savviness.
Born to Andrea and Vittoria Maria Cosentino, the youngest of 10, he was raised in Comune di Sant’ Andrea Apostolo dello Jonio, Provincia di Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy. At the age of 12, he traveled to Rome and Milan to study the clothing trade, which would later transform into a fashion career that spanned the globe.
In September of 1974, Bruno married the love of his life, Mirella, in their province in Italy. Thereafter, they migrated to the United States to begin their lifelong journey together. They purchased a home where they raised 2 daughters as first generation Americans, and afforded them both college educations.
A fashion star and notably one of the best at custom tailoring in the world, he began his career working two jobs shortly after arriving in the United States, one of which was working in the alterations department at Lord & Taylor. He later moved on to designer NYC outfitters Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Alfred Dunhill, and Prada. He was featured in publications such as GQ Magazine, Departures, Details Magazine, Cigar Aficionado, Gotham Magazine, Town & Country, Parisian Gentleman, and Page Six of The New York Post. He was a master bespoke tailor, respected and deemed a legend by his peers; sought after by many seeking to learn the trade and those who wanted a custom made, classic suit. He designed clothing for celebrities including Chris Rock, Martin Scorscese, and scores of other notable international figures, and was the exclusive personal tailor for David Letterman for over a decade.
In his private life, he took pride in renovating his home and spending time with his family, watching classic foreign films and westerns, listening to jazz music, and cherishing his cars.
Bruno is predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Mirella; is survived by his eldest daughter, Vittoria Valentin (Angelo), grandsons Joseph and Cristofer; his youngest daughter, Gabriella Cosentino; and his nieces and nephews in Italy.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 11:00am to 12:30pm at the Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Rt. 59 Suffern, NY. Funeral Services will be held following Visitation at 12:30pm also at the Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Maryrest Chapel Mausoleum in Mahwah, NJ.
No flowers, please. Donations or a memorial tribute gift may be made in Bruno’s name to PBS/Thirteen (pbs.org), in honor of his love, passion and devotion to the arts.
