1931-2018
Constance Albena Ross, of Spring Valley, NY, died on October 3, 2018 unexpectedly. She was the only child of Stella Challenger and Henry Hamptonie, born September 30, 1931 in New York, NY, where she grew up.
Connie graduated from high school with a concentration in clerical studies and built her career focused on administrative management and support of the research PhD’s at the New York State Division of Substance Abuse Services. She retired from New York State employment in 1989. Mrs. Ross was a 36 year resident of Rockland County and a member of the Poinsettia Chapter No. 76 of The Order of the Eastern Stars. She also held past membership in the Spring Valley chapter of the NAACP and had served on the board of her condo and co-op communities. Connie strongly believed in exercising her right to vote and worked the polls on election days. She was baptized in the Catholic faith and before becoming less mobile, was a parishioner of The Church of Saint Joseph in Spring Valley, NY.
Connie enjoyed reading murder mysteries, especially the Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes series and looked forward to sitting poolside in Aruba with her books, spending more than 30 years visiting the island each summer. She grew up frequenting the movie theater for Saturday matinees and loved to watch musicals with her family. Connie was a master of the crossword puzzle and looked forward to conquering the New York Times crossword daily, building on her vocabulary and honing her skill. She could also be found watching Jeopardy to challenge herself on the wealth of knowledge she gained through her years of life experiences.
She is survived by 3 children, Michael Jacocks, Barbara Ross Miller and Bert Ross Jr., 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rosemarie Rivera.
