

Eileen (Peggy) Margaret Flannery, beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and devoted community member, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Born in New York City on October 27, 1932, to the late Bernard and Ann (McKenna) McCaffrey, Eileen grew up surrounded by a large, loving Irish family and over 100 first cousins, instilling in her a deep sense of family, faith, and community.
Eileen earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Notre Dame of Staten Island (now part of St. John’s University) and her Master’s Degree from Hunter College. She dedicated her career to teaching in the New York City Schools, shaping countless young minds and touching the lives of her students.
A woman of generosity and principle, Eileen supported numerous causes throughout her life, including Emily’s List, Maryknoll, and Catholic Charities. She was a voracious reader, an avid crossword enthusiast who loved traveling and spending time at the beach. She was also a founding and lifelong parishioner of St. Boniface Parish in Wesley Hills. Most of all, her children and grandchildren brought her immense joy and were the light of her life.
Eileen is survived by her children: Edward Flannery (Rebeca), Mary Flannery (Steve Schaarschurch), Cathy Zendell (Jon), and Paul Flannery; her grandchildren: Christopher (Taylor), Kelli, Kate (Matt), Brian, Julia, Michael, Molly, and Luke; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Flannery; her beloved son, John Flannery; her sister, Ann McGuire; and her parents.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 4–7 PM at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Rt 59, Suffern, NY 10901. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Boniface, 5 Willow Tree Road, Wesley Hills, NY 10952, followed by interment at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, NY.
Eileen’s life was a testament to love, faith, learning, and generosity. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
