Eugene Dacilas son of Luc Athis and Norimene Dacilas was born on December 21, 1929 in Miragoane, Haiti. Eugene married his lifetime friend and partner Marie Therese Alexander in 1964. He moved from Haiti to French Guyana and Spring Valley, NY in 1968. During his 50 years in Rockland County he worked for Lakeside Elementary School and Summit Park Hospital. He was a member of the St. Joseph Parish in Rockland County. He was always ready to help others reach their potential as he helped his family members enter the United States for better quality of life. He was a natural Mr. Fix – it because he could fix anything. If there was a project to do be done he definitely had a tool in his shed to accomplish the task. There was never a house project that was too big or too small. He enjoyed helping his friends. Eugene was the person in your life that you could call on for help and he would be ready to assist. In all the years Eugene lived in Rockland County, it was in that memorable yellow house on Valley View Terrace. His door was opened to all that needed a place to stay. One of his favorite past times was to sit on his back porch and talk about life, ideas and of course about Haiti. Sitting on that back porch was a place many could go to have a listening ear or to get advice from Grand-pa Eugene, Daddy Eugene, or Ton Agen as he was affectionately called.
Eugene was a pillar and leader in his community. He became a Mason and was instrumental in pioneering the first Masonic lodge in Spring Valley, NY. After retiring from many years of hard work, Eugene decided to follow his dream of being an entrepreneur. He pursued several businesses opportunities over the years including building a hotel in Fond De Negres and boutique in Carrefour Haiti. Whenever speaking with him he would often say “nou pral nan” Carrefour or “nap passe nan boutik la”and many other of his infamous sayings. If you were traveling to Haiti he would be the one to assist coordinating all the transportation plans for you. It was wonderful to see him accomplishing many of his big business ideas. He was a beloved advisor to many friends and family. His wisdom and guidance has blessed so many and he will truly be missed.
Eugene leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 54 years Marie T.
