George J. Conklin Jr. of Suffern passed into eternal rest on March 6, 2011 at the age of 94. He was born in Suffern on November 28, 1916 to the late Elizabeth (Broderick) and George J. Conklin Sr. He was married for 51 years to his late wife Anastatia (Anne) Pfeister. George was employed by Town of Ramapo Highway Department for 33 years and served as Superintendant of the Highway Dept for 13 of those years. In 1985 his term as Superintendent was interrupted for a year when he took the position as Supervisor for the Town of Ramapo to fill the vacancy left by the death of Town Supervisor Frederick Rella. After he completed this term he returned to his position as Highway Superintendant till his retirement in 1988. He Graduated from Suffern High School. He attended E.I. Dupont School for Production, Cornell University School of Highway Maintenance and Rutgers University School for Firematics. George was a member of the American Legion Post No. 1447, Charter Member of Rockland County Fire Chief's Association, Life Member of Rockland County Volunteer Fire Association, and Life Member of the Tallman Fire Department where he had held the position of Secretary/Treasurer for\ many years. He was formerly Rockland County Deputy Fire Coordinator (44-2) and a former Assistant Chief of Monsey Fire Department, Charter member H.E.L.P program in Rockland County and Instructor at the Rockland County Fire Training Center over the years. George had a passion for fishing and spent his leisure time doing what he loved so and that was casting his fishing rod. George was affectionately known to his Children and Grandchildren as well as many others as "Pop". He will be greatly missed by his surviving family a daughter Patricia Manuli, of Manchester, NJ, a Son George Conklin III and wife Susan, daughter-in-law Elena Conklin all of Suffern, 10 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, a sister Grace Byrne (Thomas), sister-in-law Barbara Conklin and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Anne, a son Edward, son-in-law Thomas Manuli and four brothers. Visitation Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home 177 Rt. 59 Suffern, NY. Funeral Mass Thursday 10:00am at Sacred Heart Church, Suffern, NY followed by an Interment at Ascension Cemetery, Airmont, NY. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to United Hospice of Rockland and ARC of Rockland.
