George Doremus, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 30th. Born in Tallman, NY to George and Mildred Doremus on December 15, 1931. He is survived by his devoted wife Roberta of 53 years, his daughter Doreen Zarcone and son-in-law Robert Zarcone, son, Robert Doremus, and son, George Doremus, cherished grandchildren Dominick Zarcone, Robert Doremus, Jr., and Gina Zarcone, sisters, Helen Ackerly and Doris Marsden, and many more family and friends. He was a devoted volunteer fireman since 1942 when he became a junior fireman at the Tallman Fire Department. He served the volunteer fire service with distinction and received numerous honors and awards. He served as Chief of the Tallman Fire Department (1960-1962), President of the Tallman Fire Department (1965-1966), Commissioner of the Tallman Fire District (1979-2013), and President of the Association of Fire Districts of Rockland County (1996-1999). He began his 74 year membership of the Tallman Fire Department as a junior member. He is a 60 year member of the Rockland County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association, 50 year member of the Rockland County Fire Chief’s Association, and a 36 year member of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs. He spent his life serving on many Fire Department, Fire District, and Rockland County committees and serving others in need. He served in the United States Navy as an Engineman in Firehouse 3 in Bainbridge, MD, where he received a National Defense Service Medal. George was a 40 year employee of Geiger Lumber in Tallman, NY and a dedicated employee of Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home for over 30 years.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 2-4PM and 6-9PM at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY. Fire Department service will be at 7:30PM during the visitation. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 5th, 10AM also at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home with entombment to follow at Garden of Memories, Washington Township, NJ.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Tallman Fire Department Memorial Fund.
