George Francis O’Dell, Jr., a devoted husband, proud veteran, and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was born on September 9, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late George Francis O’Dell, Sr. and Mary O’Dell (née Moriarty).
George proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged, a service he carried with quiet pride throughout his life.
On October 9, 1965, he married the love of his life, Marie Capasso, at St. Theresa of Lisieux Church in Brooklyn. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, laughter, and unwavering devotion to one another.
George dedicated more than 40 years of service to Consolidated Edison, where he worked as a Nuclear Mechanic. Much of his career was spent at the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, New York, where he was respected for his knowledge, dedication, and work ethic before retiring after a long and distinguished career.
Faith was the center of George’s life. A deeply devoted Catholic, he prayed the Rosary every day with unwavering commitment and rarely missed his weekly time in Eucharistic Adoration each Thursday. His faith was not only something he practiced privately but something that guided how he lived—through kindness, humility, and devotion to others. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Church in Sloatsburg, a proud member of the Holy Name Society, and also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Joyce Kilmer Council #1177 in Suffern, New York.
Those who knew George will always remember his incredible sense of humor. A natural jokester, he loved to make people laugh and could brighten any room with his wit. Beneath that humor was a deeply kind, loving, and loyal family man who cherished time spent with those he loved.
George was an avid reader who loved history and possessed what many described as an encyclopedia of knowledge. He enjoyed learning, sharing stories, and talking about historical events with anyone willing to listen.
Even into his eighties, and despite living with heart problems, George remained incredibly active and determined. He took great pride in caring for his home and yard and could often be found mowing the lawn, raking leaves, or shoveling snow in all kinds of weather. His dedication to hard work and staying active was something that truly defined him.
George loved the islands and the beach, where he found peace in the warm sun, ocean air, and simple joy of being near the water.
He also had a distinctive sense of style that everyone recognized. Whether it was his long leather trench coat, hoop earring, gold chains and large rings, Harley-Davidson or Carhartt attire, or his collection of sports jackets paired with matching two-toned shoes, George always dressed with confidence and personality. He took pride in his appearance and carried himself with unmistakable character.
Deeply committed to his community, George served as a member of the Sloatsburg Ambulance Corps and spent many years on the Sloatsburg Library Board. He generously volunteered his time for numerous community events year after year, always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Marie U. O’Dell; his son, George T. O’Dell and his wife, Kathleen; his cherished grandchildren, Tara, Kacey, and Shannon; and his adored great-grandchildren, Lucas, Logan, and Hadley. He is also survived by his special friends, Joanne and Thomas Pisani; and his godchildren, Alanna Pisani and Thomas Pisani and his family.
George will be remembered for his humor, generosity, deep faith, unmistakable personality, and the profound love he had for his family, friends, and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched with kindness, laughter, wisdom, and devotion.
