George James Smith, 73 passed away after a 2-yr. battle with lung cancer. George is survived by his wife of 10-1/2 years, Angela; son Tristan (Crissy) of Wasila, AK, sister, Ginny (Peter) Rietz of West Milford.NJ, stepsons Scott Sullivan (Eileen), Gregg (Isabel), grandsons James and
Andrew, granddaughters Julia and Stephanie and great-grandchildren Oscar and Abigail Rose. George is pre-deceased by his second wife, Durga Kumaraswamy and survived by first wife Susan Kinder of New Mexico.
George was raised in Floral Park, NY. After attending St. John’s University for two years he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 101st Infantry. He served as an MP Sgt. serving in Viet Nam and Ft.Bragg. George earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and numerous
commendations. After completion of service, George returned to St. Johns University, earning a degree in Economics. He went on to San Diego State and received a Masters in Computer Science. George worked for the U.S. Navy at their Naval Weapons Center in China Lake, CA creating software. Motorola then hired him to work in Chicago creating software for them. He was then sent to Bangalore, India to form a division of employees creating and developing software which eventually grew to several hundred employees. George’s basic “Claim to Fame” simply put is, 'developing software on how to develop software.' George wrote several books and training manuals on the subject.
George loved all dogs, missed his late dogs Shadow and Fuzzy, swimming in his pool, his garden, planting over 150 tulip and daffodil bulbs with Fuzzy by his side, reading Barron’s front to back every week as well as the comics. He was a great fan of Star Trek, Ancient Aliens,
Unsolved Mysteries and Big Bang Theory because in his own words, “I am a nerd too.” His musical tastes ran from classic rock to classical to heavy classical. He loved Dr. Who, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar.
George was a good man, never uttered a racial slur, used bad language or raised his voice. He was “Ma Man.” So glad he came into all our lives.
Following George’s wishes, he will be cremated and he will be buried with, “His Brothers .” There will be no religious services.
Family and Friends are invited to visit at the Smith home on Thursday, April 29 from 2PM; there will be a military funeral on Friday April 30 at the Frederick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 11am All invited.
