Josephine Insalaco Ragusa passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, at Nyack Hospital.
Born March 11, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Charles and Angela Insalaco, Josephine was the eldest of three children and a beloved sister to her two brothers. She graduated from Commercial High School and began her career in secretarial work, eventually becoming a legal secretary for Judge Imperato.
Josephine had always loved children and would have cherished the opportunity to become a teacher. After retiring, she found a special way to fulfill that dream by volunteering at a local school, where she helped children with their reading. The school’s principal often told her that she would have made a wonderful teacher. Her love of education was carried on by both of her sons, who became teachers and deans.
In 1951, Josephine married the love of her life, Salvatore Ragusa. Together, they raised their twin sons in Brooklyn and shared more than 63 years of marriage. They later made their home in Staten Island before moving to Tappan Zee Manor in Nyack, NY, to be closer to family.
Josephine was a devoted caregiver to her parents and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She and Sal enjoyed traveling and especially treasured the time they spent welcoming friends and family to their place in the Poconos.
An avid reader, Josephine always seemed to have a novel on hand to borrow and share. She also had a wonderful talent for decorating and enjoyed creating beautiful painted pottery for every holiday and special occasion. Those pieces, lovingly made by her, remain displayed throughout her families homes all year long—a lasting reminder of her creativity, warmth, and love.
Josephine was predeceased by her beloved husband, Salvatore, and her son, Charles. She is survived by her son, Nick Ragusa, and his wife, Gail; and her grandchildren, Salvatore (Betty) and Matthew.
She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 4:00–8:00 PM at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY 10901.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 25, 2026, 10:30 am St. Thomas Church 6097 Amboy Rd. Staten Island , NY 10309( GPS- 50 Maguire Ave) with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 361 Sharrott Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10309
