Marie E. McDonald-Hickey

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Marie spent most of her life in the community she loved and proudly called home. After retirement, she and her beloved husband, Thomas Hickey, fulfilled a lifelong dream by moving to Accord, New York, where Marie had spent many cherished summers growing up. The beauty and tranquility of the Hudson Valley brought her great happiness, and Accord became the place she was always meant to be.

Marie dedicated her professional life to education through a long and distinguished career with the New York City Board of Education. Over the years, she served as a Reading Specialist, Dean of Discipline, and Student Activities Coordinator. She was known for her unwavering commitment to students and her unique ability to balance discipline with compassion.

A devoted volunteer throughout her life, Marie was deeply involved in many organizations and causes. She began her volunteer service with the Ragamuffin Parade in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, eventually becoming President of the organization. She also served as President of the Catholic Teachers Association of Brooklyn after many years of active membership and leadership. Following her retirement, she continued her commitment to service through volunteer work with the Church of St. Mary & St. Andrew and Our Lady of Lourdes Mission and the Little Ones Learning Center in Accord, New York.

Marie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid reader and an accomplished quilter whose handmade quilts became treasured gifts for family and friends. Through every stitch, she shared her creativity, warmth, and love with those around her.

Above all else, Marie cherished her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas Hickey; her loving daughter, Marie Reger (Saunders); her son-in-law, William Reger; and her beloved granddaughter, Caeleigh Reger.

Marie will be remembered for her dedication to education, her commitment to service, her generosity, her strength, and the love she shared with her family, friends, students, and community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched and the countless memories she helped create.

Visitation will be held at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY 10901, US, on August 30, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi's Church, 128 Parrott Rd, West Nyack, NY 10994, US, on August 31, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

Burial will be Follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 3620 Tilden Ave, New York, NY 11203.
