Born Grimstad, Norway, Nils Magnus Skarli raised by a single mother with his younger sister, Solveig, after the death of his father at age 2. He joined the merchant Marines at age 15 1/2 and spent 18 months in the Norwegian Navy. He immigrated to the United States in 1956 and married Halldis Birkedal. They had 2 children, He is survived by them and 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was a founding member of Faith Assembly of God in Spring Valley (now Chestnut Ridge) and was in church leadership for over 60 years. He was the superintendent of the Blueberry Hill apartment complex for nearly 40 years. Most people recognized him by the hearty greeting he gave them as they entered the church he helped build. He was always the one to point people to Christ. From the NYC pimp, to the single mom, to the new immigrant, or those who had lost their way. He continued his outreach even to his caregivers who assisted him in his nearly 5-year hiatus in South Carolina. He leaves a void because of the huge role and influence he had in our collective lives. He is preceded in death by his mother Esther (Tornquist) Skarli, wife Halldis (Birkedal) Skarli, and half-sister Aagot Simonsen. He is survived by his sister Solveig L. Farkas, his daughter Esther J.
