Peter G DeMarco MD FAAP was born on March 24th, 1934 in Corona, Queens NY to Michael and Dominica DeMarco and raised in Flushing, Queens. He attended Manhattan College 1952-1955 and matriculated to New York Medical College at School Flower & 5th Avenue in Manhattan from 1955-1959. During this time, he married Philomena Rella on June 14, 1959. He continued his medical training as a pediatrician with an Internship at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan from 1959-1960, and then a residency at Stony Brook Hospital in Long Island 1960-1962. Through the Berry Plan, he served in the Air Force Reserves at Dow Air Force SAC base in Bangor ME during the Cuban Missile Crisis from 1962-1964.
Dr. DeMarco moved to Suffern NY in 1964 for private practice in General Pediatrics; he spent his entire professional career serving this community, including working as a volunteer as the Chief of Pediatrics at Good Samaritan Hospital. His civil service was recognized with several achievement awards from Rockland County and New York State. He was an avid painter, and multi-talented craftsman. He was a brilliant humorist and notorious jokester, sharing his wit with his patients and their parents. Many pediatric patients returned to him as parents, looking for care for their own children. He inspired numerous young people to pursue careers in health care.
He is survived by his wife, Philomena, his sister Joy Calvo (children Linda Spalding and Lauren Calvo) as well as his natural and married children – Peter, Paul (wife Eileen), and Cathyann (husband, Jim) as well as 7 grandchildren: Peter’s daughter Clare, Paul and Eileen’s children Andrew, Elisabeth and Michael, and Cathyann and Jim’s children Julia, Jimmy and Gianna.
A viewing is planned for January 23rd, 2019 2-4 & 7-9pm at Wanamaker and Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59 Suffern, NY. Mass of Christian Burial is planned for January 24th, 2019 10:00am at St Joan of Arc Parish, 32 Eagle Valley Road in Sloatsburg NY. Entombment to follow at Ascension Cemetery.
