

Chestnut Ridge, NY, died Saturday, October 23,2010 at CareOne of
Jackson. He was 82 years old. Richard was born on June 3, 1928 in
Westwood, NJ to Sidney and Jennie Straut Cable. Richard served in the
Pacific as an occupation soldier from '46-'47 and was recalled to service
in Korea as a Sergeant First Class from '50-'53. He was hand-picked for
the Third Infantry, or “The Old Guard,” perennial guards to Presidents
and other high national officials in Washington upon his return from
combat in Korea. Richard had guarded President Harry S. Truman
and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Other tasks included leading a
platoon of soldiers moving the original U.S Constitution
and Declaration of Independence from the Library of Congress; the
funeral of Gen. Jonathan Wainwright; the welcoming of the King and
Queen, Field Marshall Montgomery, Gen. William Dean, Sir Winston
Churchill, and French Chief-of-Staff Rene Mayer; and parades for Gen.
Omar Bradley and Gen. Lawton J. Collins. Richard received a letter of
commendation for his service in “The Old Guard” from Capt. P. L. Mason,
his commanding officer. In 2001, Richard received the Distinguished
Service Medal from the NJ Dept. of Military and Veteran Affairs for
distinguished meritorious service in ground combat during the Korean
War. Richard later owned Cable Beverages of Bardonia, NY. He was a
member of the American Legion Post 199 and VFW Post 04703. He is
survived by his loving wife, Esther A. Cable of Jackson, NJ; daughter
Carol Harris of Congers, NY; daughter
Susan Dloughy of Pittsburgh, PA; son David Cable of Charlotte, NC;
daughter-in-law Donna Cable of Suffern, NY; grandson Gary Harris, and
granddaughters Melissa Dloughy Bender, Kristen Dloughy, Jenna Harris,
Jessica Dloughy, and Tara Cable, great-granddaughter Kaitlyn Harris,
sisters Helen Savastano and Joan Boniello, brother Floyd Cable, stepsons
Richard Stilwell and Robert Stilwell, and many cousins, nephews,
nieces and other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his
beloved wife of 43 years, Mary Daly Cable, son Richard G. “Rick”
Cable, daughter Mary, parents Sidney and Jennie Cable, brothers Robert, Russell and
Edwin Cable, and sister Edythe Lechner. The family will be present to
receive friends on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at the WANAMAKER & CARLOUGH
FH, 177 Rt. 59, SUFFERN, NY, 10901, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral
Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 27, 2010
at 10 AM. Interment will be at Airmont Lutheran Cemetery, Airmont, NY.
