

Ruth Cherry Wein was born to Sarah (Spivak) and Harry Cherry in Philadelphia, on July 31st, 1921. A graduate of West Philadelphia High and a cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Columbia University School of General Studies, she earned a master degree from Hunter College School of Social Work.
In 1946, she married Albert Wein following his return from the U.S. Air Force after World War Two. With their children, Kenneth and Roberta, they moved from Manhattan to Nanuet, Rockland County, in 1956, where she became an active member of the League of Women Voters and was awarded life membership in the Bardonia PTA.
Under her leadership, services for blind and visually impaired people were expanded from a program in the Health Department to the non-profit Association for the Visually Impaired, the agency she directed for 19 years. She was also one of the founders, a board member and one term president of TRIPS, the community transportation system for the elderly and handicapped. She was a member of the steering committee for the Rockland Development Group, an organization of development officers of non-profit organizations. For six years, she was the director of Literacy Volunteers of Rockland County.
In retirement, she was a member, and then chairperson, of the scholarship committee of the Spring Valley Rotary Club and volunteer for Helping Hands. She has been the first woman member of the Monsey Rotary Club and in 1967, the founding President of Planned Parenthood of Rockland County.
Mrs. Wein was an avid gardener, dance aficionado, and crossword puzzler.
Ruth was predeceased by her dearly beloved husband, Albert, a very special person, after 62 wonderful years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her brother, Ben Cherry, of Margate, New Jersey, and Norman Cherry, of Philadelphia.
She is cherished and is survived by her son, Kenneth, his wife Lee, daughter Roberta, and grandson Jeremyah. A celebration of her life will be held at Wanamaker and Carlough Funeral Home.
