Walter Esteban Menéndez Olinden was born on December 26, 1950, in Arequipa, Peru. As the oldest of seven siblings, Walter embraced responsibility from an early age and developed the strong sense of family, leadership, and compassion that would define his life.
A dedicated educator, Walter worked as a teacher in Peru and was passionate about learning and service to others. During his younger years, he proudly represented Peru through the Peruvian Swimming Federation, traveling throughout South America and building lifelong memories.
On March 5, 1983, Walter married the love of his life, Mariela Enriquez de Menéndez, in Lima, Peru. Together they built a marriage rooted in love, partnership, and unwavering devotion. Their greatest blessing arrived on March 30, 1985, with the birth of their daughter, Mariella Liset, who became the center of his world.
Walter later worked for the Ministry of Education of Peru, where he traveled extensively to rural and economically disadvantaged communities. Through this work, he assessed the socioeconomic needs of underserved towns and helped identify resources and support for mothers and children. His commitment to helping those in need reflected the generosity, empathy, and sense of purpose that characterized his life.
In 1992, Walter moved to the United States in pursuit of new opportunities for his family. He worked at the Sheraton Mahwah faithfully for 31 years. During those years, he earned the respect and affection of colleagues and friends, forming deep and lasting bonds that enriched his life and the lives of those around him.
Above all, Walter was an incredible father and a devoted husband. He led by example, offering unwavering support, guidance, wisdom, and unconditional love. His strength of character, steady presence, and selfless dedication provided a foundation upon which his family could always rely. His wife, daughter, and extended family are profoundly grateful for the countless memories they shared and for the love he gave so freely.
