On August 13, 2023, Anson David Phipps lived out his favorite scripture, the 23rd Psalm when the Lord called him home after a long illness.
Born in Houston, Texas on February 15, 1944, Anson lived his entire life in the city he was proud to call home. During elementary, middle school and high school, he developed and maintained life-long friendships with those whom he considered his “brothers” including Roy, Rodney, Jack, Malcom, Tommy C, Tommy K, Jim, Wally, and Eddie. He was a graduate of Jeff Davis High School Class of 1962 where he received the honor of being selected as “Senior Class Favorite.”
A proud alumnus of both the University of Houston and South Texas College of Law, Anson practiced law for more than 50 years. He was admitted to the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. As a trial and family law attorney, he often volunteered his skills and experience to help others in need.
In his free time, Anson enjoyed sitting on his porch listening to the rain, “playing tennis” at Memorial Park with his buddies (Roy, Stacy, Ron, and Bill), “Macho weekend” at The Place, cheering on his hometown Houston Astros and attending games for his beloved Cougars having football season tickets with friend Mick. He also enjoyed spending time with neighbors Lori, Paula, and Jess who each provided loving support to him and his family as his disease progressed.
Anson is preceded in death by his mother Ouida Elizabeth and father Ernest Otto Phipps as well as by his four older brothers, sister, sisters-in-law, nephew, and son-in-law Tom Amschwand.
He is survived by his children (and their spouses) Missy (James) and David; stepchildren Christopher (Holly), Taylor, and Samantha as well as by his grandchildren (MaryAnna, Rose, Annie, Matthew, and Cooper) who lovingly called him “Papa Bear” and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his wife Susan, younger sister Olivia, and the mother of his children Shirley who remained a life-long friend.
A celebration of Anson’s life will be held at Settegast-Kopf at Sugar Creek on September 8, 2023 at 9:30 A.M.
