Lieutenant Colonel Arnold A. “Art” Callaham (U.S. Army, Ret.), 77, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and public servant, Arnold leaves behind a legacy defined by honor, intellect, and an unwavering commitment to his country and community.
Born on October 19, 1948, in Hinton, West Virginia, Arnold grew up with a deep respect for American history and service. He answered the call to duty by serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his active-duty service, his dedication to national defense continued for decades, both as a civilian analyst for the Department of Defense and as a reserve officer, ultimately retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Arnold’s commitment to civic leadership extended well into his civilian life. He served with distinction as the Executive Director of the Greater Hagerstown Commission in Maryland, where he championed economic development and civic improvements to better the lives of those in the surrounding communities.
Beyond his professional achievements, Arnold was a man of great intellect and passion. A lifelong student of history and politics, he found joy in sharing his knowledge and engaging in thoughtful discourse. For many years, he shared his insights as a local newspaper columnist and as the host of a local-access television show. His sharp mind and love for storytelling culminated in the publication of two books of essays reflecting on life in America, and he was actively pursuing his passion, working on a third volume, at the time of his passing.
Above all else, Arnold was a family man. On October 9, 1971, he married the love of his life, Ruth Anne Cardwell. Together, they shared over 55 years of deep devotion, partnership, and beautiful memories.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Anne Callaham; his son, Arthur Callaham, and wife Erica; his daughter, Samantha Musso, and husband Chris; and his brother, Bert Callaham and his wife, Carol. He was the proud grandfather to four grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life: Ethan Mankins and his wife, Jordan, Dominic Wade, Hannah Callaham, and Aaron Callaham. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolin Simmons.
Arnold will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Arnold’s memory to a local veterans support organization in your area, honoring his lifelong dedication to his fellow service members.
